Kalima Terms of Service

Effective date: September 4, 2026

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the Kalima iOS app, https://kalimaapp.com, cloud services, AI-assisted language and voice services, support channels, subscriptions, and related features ("Kalima"). By downloading, accessing, or using Kalima, you agree to these Terms.

For questions, contact support@kalimaapp.com. The Kalima Privacy Policy is available at https://kalimaapp.com/privacy.

1. Who These Terms Are With

These Terms are between you and Kalima's independent operator, the provider identified in the App Store listing and Kalima's published legal notices. "Kalima," "we," "us," and "our" refer to that operator.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 16 years old and old enough to use online services in your country. If you are under the age of majority, you may use Kalima only with permission from a parent or legal guardian.

You may not use Kalima if applicable law prohibits you from doing so.

3. Accounts

Normal use of Kalima requires a real, non-anonymous account through supported sign-in providers such as Apple or Google. You are responsible for keeping your sign-in method, device, and account secure.

You agree to provide accurate account information and to notify us if you believe your account has been compromised.

We may suspend or restrict access if we believe your account is being misused, violates these Terms, creates legal risk, or threatens the security or operation of Kalima.

4. License to Use Kalima

Subject to these Terms, we grant you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to install and use Kalima for your own lawful reading and learning purposes.

The app is licensed, not sold. For an App Store download, the license is limited to Apple-branded products that you own or control, subject to Apple's Usage Rules, including any access permitted through Family Sharing or volume purchasing.

You may not:

  • Copy, modify, sell, rent, lease, sublicense, or redistribute Kalima except as allowed by law.
  • Reverse engineer or attempt to extract source code except where applicable law allows it.
  • Bypass paywalls, entitlement checks, usage limits, App Check, authentication, or security controls.
  • Interfere with Kalima's services, infrastructure, or other users.
  • Use Kalima to violate law, infringe rights, distribute malware, harass others, or process unlawful content.
  • Abuse AI, cloud sync, import, OCR, speech, or subscription systems.

5. Your Content

"Your Content" means books, files, documents, scans, extracted text, URLs, vocabulary entries, bookmarks, highlights, notes, prompts, recordings, and other material you import, enter, save, or process in Kalima.

You keep ownership of Your Content. You grant Kalima a limited, non-exclusive license to host, copy, convert, process, transmit, cache, and display Your Content only as needed to operate, secure, maintain, and support the features you choose, including import, EPUB normalization, OCR, reading, vocabulary, cloud sync, translation, lookup, AI voice, backup, support, security, and legal compliance.

This license includes transmitting the content needed for a feature to the service providers identified in the Privacy Policy. It lasts only as long as needed for the requested service and applicable retention, backup, security, or legal obligations. It does not give Kalima the right to sell Your Content, use it for advertising, or train Kalima-owned AI models.

You are responsible for Your Content. You represent that you have the rights needed to import, store, sync, process, and use Your Content in Kalima. Do not upload or process content that violates copyright, privacy, publicity, confidentiality, or other rights.

6. Imported Books, Documents, URLs, and Public-Domain Catalogs

Kalima supports importing books and documents and may normalize supported formats to EPUB for the reader. Kalima does not guarantee that every file can be imported, converted, displayed, preserved, or synced.

When you import from a URL, you are responsible for having permission to access and process that page. The website you import from may receive your request and handle it under its own terms and privacy policy.

Discovery uses public catalog sources such as Gutendex and Project Gutenberg. Catalog data, downloads, covers, metadata, public-domain status, availability, and quality are controlled by third parties. Kalima is not responsible for third-party catalog accuracy, downtime, content, or licensing determinations.

7. Cloud Sync

Kalima provides always-free account continuity for your learning languages and daily goals. It requires a real non-anonymous account. Kalima Pro separately provides local-first sync for eligible library, vocabulary, review, and reading data. Eligible book metadata, book files, vocabulary, study history, review events, progress, bookmarks, highlights, notes, billing state, and sync state may be stored in Firebase services under your account when Pro sync is active.

If your Kalima Pro entitlement expires, Pro sync access ends. Former-Pro library, vocabulary, study, and reading data remains eligible for restoration for up to 12 calendar months after the authoritative entitlement expiry and may then be permanently purged. Always-free learning languages, learning-space records, and daily goals remain until you delete the account.

Cloud sync is provided as a convenience. We do not guarantee that sync will be uninterrupted, immediate, error-free, or that every item can be recovered. Keep your own backups of important content.

Signing out resets local account data on the device but does not delete cloud data. Deleting your account is required to request deletion of cloud account data.

8. AI, Translation, Lookup, and Voice Features

Kalima may provide translation, word lookup, vocabulary help, pronunciation support, and text-to-speech features. Reader translation and lookup may send a selected word or sentence, nearby context, and source and target languages to Google AI through Firebase AI. Kalima Pro read-aloud sends speech text, voice settings, generated audio, and related media directly between the app and Inworld; Firebase mints a short-lived Inworld authorization token and carries no speech media.

When you deliberately request Google-assisted translation or lookup, Kalima sends the selected word or sentence, nearby context, and source and target languages to Google/Firebase. Free users use Apple device text-to-speech. Kalima Pro always uses Inworld for read-aloud and sends speech text, target language, selected Inworld voice and synthesis settings directly to Inworld. Kalima Pro never falls back to Apple text-to-speech; if Inworld playback fails, Kalima surfaces the failure for retry. Pronunciation practice separately uses Apple Speech Recognition under Apple's terms and privacy policy.

As verified on these Terms' effective date, Kalima's production Firebase project uses a billing-enabled Gemini Developer API service. Google's current paid-service terms state that prompts and responses are not used to improve Google products, although limited logging may occur for abuse monitoring, safety, security, or legal purposes. Inworld's current public service-specific terms allow it to use submitted inputs to provide, maintain, develop, improve, secure, and protect its services. Kalima does not claim zero data retention unless it is separately contracted and verified.

Kalima presents provider processing when you deliberately request the related feature. The current app does not provide a separate provider-specific consent screen before requested text is sent to Google/Firebase or Inworld. Do not use a provider feature unless you accept the processing described in the Privacy Policy.

Kalima separately reports best-effort account-linked operational Inworld usage to Firebase when a signed-in user generates Inworld speech. The report contains provider-reported and separately labelled estimated character counts, generation count, an account-scoped installation/replica identifier (AccountReplicaID), phone/tablet/other device class, OS major version, app version, and build number. The replica identifier approximates an app installation but is not guaranteed to represent one physical device. The Firebase user ID is derived from authentication. These reports do not contain reading text, audio, book IDs, voice, language, playback history, PostHog identifiers, Firebase Installation IDs, or email.

The meter counts new Inworld generation, including generated prefetches, retries, and provider-reported partial attempts. It excludes Apple text-to-speech and cached or repeated playback that performs no new generation. The figures support reliability and capacity operations, are not billing-grade, and do not enforce a quota, block speech, change entitlement, or drive billing. Occasional loss is possible when the app terminates or remains offline.

Share Analytics controls only optional PostHog product analytics. The account-linked operational Inworld usage meter is independent of PostHog and remains active for signed-in Inworld generation whether Share Analytics is on or off. Account-linked Inworld usage daily totals and installation/replica metadata are retained for 13 months. Short-lived batch receipts used to prevent duplicate counting are retained for seven days. These records are deleted with the account, as described in the Privacy Policy.

AI outputs can be incomplete, inaccurate, offensive, unavailable, or unsuitable for your purpose. You should not rely on AI output as professional, legal, medical, financial, safety, emergency, or other expert advice.

Do not submit sensitive personal information, confidential information, regulated data, or content you do not have permission to process through AI features.

Kalima does not provide or enforce a user-facing AI voice character or usage balance. The separate operational meter is not a quota, entitlement authority, or billing record. Google AI and Inworld features remain subject to rate limits, provider availability, and technical constraints. Available voices, models, latency, quality, and availability may change over time.

9. Subscriptions and Purchases

Kalima may offer paid features through Kalima Pro or other subscription products. Purchases are processed through Apple's App Store in-app purchase system and managed with RevenueCat.

Kalima Pro is offered in the United States at $12 per month or $99 per year; Apple shows your applicable localized price before purchase. Eligible new subscribers may receive a seven-day free trial on either plan before renewal. Apple and RevenueCat determine introductory-offer eligibility once across the Kalima Pro subscription group, so using a trial on one plan does not create a second trial entitlement on the other plan.

Before you subscribe, Kalima or Apple's purchase sheet will show the subscription title, length, price, renewal terms, and included benefits. Subscriptions may renew automatically unless canceled through Apple before the renewal deadline shown by Apple. Your Apple ID may be charged at purchase confirmation and for renewals according to Apple's App Store terms, your selected plan, and local law.

You can manage or cancel subscriptions in Apple App Store settings. Deleting the Kalima app, signing out, deleting your Kalima account, or losing access to a Kalima account does not cancel an Apple App Store subscription.

Refunds are handled by Apple unless applicable law requires otherwise. We may change prices, plans, features, limits, and entitlements, but price changes for active subscriptions will be handled according to Apple's rules and applicable law.

If a payment fails, a subscription expires, a refund is issued, or RevenueCat or Apple reports that you are not entitled to a paid feature, access to paid features may be reduced, suspended, or removed.

10. Account Deletion and Termination

You may delete your Kalima account in the app. Kalima removes local app data from that device immediately and schedules active cloud deletion for seven days after your request. Signing in again during that recovery period cancels the scheduled deletion. After the recovery period, Kalima's deletion system disables access and retries removal of the RevenueCat customer record, Firebase Auth account, cloud documents (including operational Inworld usage records), sync records, and storage files under your user paths.

For Apple-linked accounts, Kalima also attempts to revoke Sign in with Apple authorization and removes the encrypted revocation credential when deletion finalizes. Deleted Sync V1 data may remain recoverable for up to seven days in Firestore point-in-time recovery and up to 30 days in daily backups or Storage soft delete. Content-free security and deletion fences, provider logs, or records required by law may remain longer as explained in the Privacy Policy.

Deleting your Kalima account does not cancel your Apple App Store subscription. Manage or cancel subscriptions separately through Apple.

We may suspend or terminate access to Kalima if we believe you violated these Terms, used Kalima unlawfully, created security risk, abused services, caused harm, failed to pay for paid features, or if we must do so to comply with law or provider requirements.

11. Privacy

Kalima's handling of personal information is described in the Kalima Privacy Policy at https://kalimaapp.com/privacy. By using Kalima, you acknowledge that Kalima and its providers may process information as described there.

12. Third-Party Services

Kalima depends on external services that receive information or deliver requested features, including Apple, Google/Firebase, Inworld, RevenueCat, PostHog, Cloudflare, Gutendex, Project Gutenberg, and websites you choose to import from.

External services are governed by their own terms, policies, availability, and security practices. Kalima remains responsible for its own obligations when selecting or instructing providers, but cannot control independent provider services, third-party content, interruptions, policy changes, billing systems, AI models, catalog data, or websites.

13. Feedback

If you send ideas, suggestions, feedback, or bug reports, you grant us the right to use them without restriction or compensation. You should not send confidential information as feedback.

14. Intellectual Property

Kalima, including its app design, software, trademarks, logos, service names, and related materials, is owned by us or our licensors and is protected by intellectual-property laws.

Public-domain and third-party books or metadata remain subject to their own legal status and source terms.

15. Copyright and Rights Complaints

Kalima is designed for private reading and learning. If you believe content processed through Kalima infringes your rights or that Kalima is being misused, contact support@kalimaapp.com with enough information for us to review the issue.

We may remove access, disable features, delete content, or terminate accounts where required by law or where we believe use of Kalima infringes rights or violates these Terms.

16. Updates and Changes to Kalima

Kalima may update automatically or through the App Store. We may add, change, suspend, limit, or remove features, providers, plans, catalog sources, voices, AI models, sync behavior, or compatibility requirements.

If you have an active paid period, we will not remove the material paid benefits marketed for that period except where a change is reasonably required by law, security, abuse prevention, or circumstances beyond our reasonable control. If such a change deprives you of a material paid benefit, you are entitled to any remedy or refund required by Apple's rules or mandatory consumer law.

Some features may depend on network access, iOS permissions, third-party services, provider quotas, subscription status, or device capability.

17. Disclaimers

Kalima is provided "as is" and "as available." To the maximum extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, non-infringement, availability, accuracy, and uninterrupted operation.

We do not guarantee that:

  • Kalima will be error-free, secure, uninterrupted, or always available.
  • Imports, OCR, speech recognition, AI output, translations, definitions, study scheduling, or text-to-speech will be accurate.
  • Cloud sync will preserve or restore every item.
  • Third-party catalog content will remain available or correctly licensed.
  • Paid features, voices, models, limits, or providers will remain unchanged after your current paid period; changes during a paid period remain subject to Section 16 and mandatory remedies.

Nothing in these Terms limits rights that cannot be waived under applicable consumer law.

18. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Kalima and its operators, affiliates, licensors, and service providers will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost data, lost content, lost subscriptions, business interruption, or service unavailability.

To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability for claims related to Kalima will not exceed the greater of the amount you paid to Kalima for the service giving rise to the claim in the 12 months before the claim or USD $100.

Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so some of these limits may not apply to you.

19. Indemnity

To the extent permitted by law, you agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Kalima and its operators, affiliates, licensors, and service providers from claims, damages, losses, liabilities, costs, and expenses arising from your use of Kalima, Your Content, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of law or third-party rights.

20. Apple App Store Terms

If you downloaded Kalima from Apple's App Store, Apple's App Store terms and the https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula/ apply to the app license unless Apple presents a valid custom end-user license agreement for Kalima. These Terms supplement that license for Kalima's accounts, services, content, and subscriptions. If there is a conflict about the app license, the applicable Apple EULA controls.

These Terms are between you and Kalima, not Apple. Kalima, not Apple, is responsible for Kalima and its content, maintenance, support, warranties, product claims, legal compliance, and third-party intellectual-property claims, except as the applicable Apple EULA, Apple's rules, or law provides otherwise. If Kalima fails to conform to an applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple may refund the app's purchase price, if any, to the extent required by the applicable EULA or law; Apple has no other warranty obligation for Kalima.

You must comply with applicable third-party terms when using Kalima. Apple and Apple's subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you as related to your use of Kalima.

21. Governing Law and Disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction where Kalima's operator is legally established, excluding conflict-of-law rules. Courts with lawful jurisdiction may hear disputes relating to Kalima.

Nothing in these Terms limits consumer, privacy, digital-content, warranty, cancellation, refund, or other rights that cannot be waived under the laws of your place of residence.

22. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms as Kalima or legal requirements change. We will post the updated Terms and effective date here. For material changes, we will provide advance notice in the app, by email, or through another appropriate channel where required by law. Changes do not apply retroactively.

If you do not agree to updated Terms, you may stop using Kalima and delete your account. Your continued use after the updated Terms take effect means you accept them, except where applicable law requires a different form of consent.

23. General Terms

These Terms, the Privacy Policy, and the applicable Apple EULA form the entire agreement between you and Kalima about the subjects they cover. If a provision is unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in effect. A failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver. You may not assign these Terms without our consent; we may assign them as part of a reorganization, financing, merger, acquisition, or transfer of Kalima, subject to applicable law and continued protection of your rights.
